How to Play Krillion: Rules, Scoring and Tips
One prompt at a time, one answer per prompt, and the rarer the answer, the deeper you go.
What Krillion is
Krillion is a word-recall trivia game where being right is only half of the job. Each Krillion prompt names a category, for example a dessert made from dough, and almost any category has dozens of correct replies. The point of Krillion is to find a correct reply that most people would not think of first. Krillion.game is an independent, browser-based take on that idea: there is nothing to install, no sign-up, and no multiple-choice list to lean on. You type what you know, the server checks it, and the rarer your Krillion answer is, the further your diver sinks into the ocean.
Your first Krillion session, step by step
Open Krillion.game and press Begin Descent. A daily Krillion session is made of seven prompts that arrive one after another. Each prompt appears on a card, you get a moment to read it, and then the answer box unlocks. Type a single answer and press Enter or the Dive button. After the score appears, press Descend when you are ready for the next Krillion prompt. When the seventh answer lands, Surface takes you to the summary. That is the whole loop: read, think, type, land and descend, seven times in a row.
Read every word of the prompt
Most missed Krillion answers fail on wording, not on knowledge. A Krillion prompt often carries a condition: a name of exactly four letters, a city inside a population range, a film with a particular genre tag. Every condition counts. A famous answer that ignores one of them is simply wrong in Krillion, however clever it sounds. Before you type, repeat the prompt to yourself and test your candidate against each part of it. Broad Krillion categories reward breadth, narrow ones reward precision, and both reward a one-second pause before you commit.
How time works in a Krillion round
Every Krillion round opens with a three-second reading window during which typing is locked. Then a twenty-five-second clock starts, shown both as a number and as a shrinking bar. In the last three seconds the screen warms up and ticks audibly, so you know the Krillion buzzer is close. Time is kept by the server rather than by your device, which keeps the daily Krillion set fair for everyone. Opening the menu, the settings or this guide during a round pauses the clock, and the screen that shows your result has no timer at all.
When an answer is accepted
Krillion.game first compares what you typed with the prepared answer list for that prompt. Capital letters, punctuation and accents are ignored, known alternative names are recognised, and small spelling slips can be matched. If none of that finds your Krillion answer, an AI checker decides whether it is still a genuine, correct answer to that exact prompt, so real but unlisted answers can score too. Answers that are wrong, too vague or ambiguous are turned away with a short no-echo message, and you can try something else while the Krillion clock keeps running.
Spelling help and correction previews
When your Krillion entry looks like a misspelling of a known answer, the game can show the corrected version before scoring it. Check that the suggestion is really what you meant, because a near spelling can point at a different thing entirely. Submit again to accept it, or edit the text while time remains. If you would rather skip this step, switch Answer corrections off in Settings and the match is scored straight away. Another option, Clear rejected entries, empties the box after a miss so the next Krillion attempt starts from a blank line.
The six Krillion tiers and their points
Every accepted Krillion answer falls into one of six tiers. Plankton, the reply nearly everyone gives, is worth 10 points. Too Clever earns 15, Schooler 30, Rare 60 and Deep Cut 85. The top tier, One in a Krillion, is worth 100. A blank box or a rejected answer scores nothing. Tiers describe how unusual an answer is within that prompt, so the same answer always earns the same points. Answers confirmed by the AI checker are placed into one of these same six Krillion tiers; no extra scores are ever invented.
The Too Clever trap
Too Clever exists for answers that feel obscure but are exactly what trivia lovers reach for. It is worth barely more than Plankton, and it is the joke built into Krillion scoring: the unusual pick that half the room also picked. Spotting a Too Clever Krillion answer before you type it is a real skill. If an option seems famous precisely for being odd, there may be a quieter correct answer worth far more. A plain Schooler is often a better Krillion choice than a showy guess that turns out to be common.
Finding the One in a Krillion gem
Each prompt usually hides a single gem. A One in a Krillion answer is chosen because it is a satisfying discovery, not only because it is the rarest word on the list, so a Deep Cut can occasionally be more obscure than the gem itself. When the Krillion data includes a short note about that answer, it appears after you land on it. Treat the gem as a bonus rather than a target: hunting for it through all twenty-five seconds usually costs more Krillion points than it wins.
From points to metres
Your score doubles as depth. Each Krillion point equals ten metres, so a Rare answer drops you six hundred metres and the gem a full thousand. Depth carries over between rounds, and a perfect seven-answer Krillion session ends at seven thousand metres with seven hundred points. You can read your position from the depth ruler on the right, the water growing darker and the sea life that swims by. Shallow Plankton answers keep you near the light, while a run of rare Krillion picks takes you all the way into the trench.
If the clock runs out
When time expires with text still in the box, Krillion.game submits that text for you, and it is judged like any other Krillion answer. If the box is empty, the round ends with zero points. That makes it worth keeping a safe answer typed while you weigh a riskier one. Once a round is scored it is final, and a late request cannot reopen it. If your connection drops, the game reports the problem and asks you to retry instead of guessing a score for your Krillion round.
The results screen
After round seven, Surface brings you to the Krillion summary: total points, final depth, an overall rating band and a chart of all seven answers. Below it you can open each prompt and browse every accepted Krillion answer, sorted from the highest score down. This is the best place to learn what you missed. The rating bands, from Plankton at the low end to One in a Krillion above 450 points, describe the dive as a whole, while each individual answer keeps its own tier.
How comparisons are calculated
The score chart compares your daily Krillion result with other daily sets completed on Krillion.game for the same day. Unlimited games are left out. A percentile appears only after at least five other players have finished that day's Krillion prompts; until then the page simply says more dives are needed. These numbers come from this site's players alone. They are a snapshot of one small community on one day, not a global ranking of trivia ability.
The daily schedule
A new daily Krillion set goes live at midnight New York time, which falls at a different UTC hour in summer and in winter. The countdown on the results screen shows how long remains. Everyone playing on Krillion.game that day gets the same seven prompts, and the daily set can be completed once; coming back later reopens your finished Krillion results. If the day's questions cannot be loaded, the start screen says so and a clearly labelled sample set is served instead.
Unlimited Krillion games
Unlimited, at krillion.game/unlimited, lets you keep playing after the daily set. Each Unlimited Krillion game has its own six-digit id, shown in the address bar, so a link such as /unlimited?id=123456 always opens the same seven prompts. Without an id, the site picks a game you have not finished yet whenever one is available. Unlimited results are saved to your history but never touch your daily score, streak or comparisons. It is the relaxed side of Krillion: no once-a-day pressure, just more prompts.
Statistics, streaks and dive buddies
The Statistics panel shows your current and best daily streak, how many daily Krillion sets you have completed, your best daily score and your latest results. A streak counts consecutive days with a finished daily set; Unlimited games do not extend it. Long streaks unlock new dive buddies in the wardrobe, from the Schooler at five days to the Evil Krill at forty-five. Your Krillion history lives in this browser, so clearing site data erases it. Use Export my history to keep a copy.
Sharing a result
Copy result produces a short Krillion summary: the dive number, your points and depth, and one emoji per round showing its tier. Your actual answers are never included, so friends can still play the same prompts. Where your browser supports it, a Share button opens the system share sheet. For Unlimited games the link points straight to the game you just played. The Share link setting removes the web address if you would rather post only your Krillion score.
Sound, motion and accessibility
Krillion.game builds its sound effects in the browser, starting only after you interact with the page, and the speaker button mutes them at any time. Low-power mode cuts background animation for slower devices, and the game follows your system's reduced-motion preference. Colorblind mode raises contrast and separates the Krillion tier colours more clearly. Every control works from the keyboard, Enter submits an answer, and important feedback is also written out as text for screen readers.
Playing on a phone
On a small screen the Krillion layout shrinks the title, keeps the prompt card readable and moves the answer box within thumb reach. The layout adjusts when the on-screen keyboard opens, so the prompt stays visible above it. Keep the browser tab in front while a Krillion round is running, since the clock continues on the server. Desktop and mobile follow exactly the same Krillion rules and scoring; a larger screen simply shows more of the ocean.
Strategy for deeper dives
A dependable Krillion approach is to lock in one safe answer first, then use the remaining seconds to look for something less obvious that still fits every condition. Real, specific items beat invented rarities. Avoid the answer that is famous for being unusual. Leave a few seconds to submit, and use the answer review afterwards to see which corners of the category you never explored. Unlimited games are a good place to build this habit without risking your daily Krillion streak.
Cost, help and feedback
The daily set and Unlimited games on Krillion.game are both free, with no subscriptions, credits or checkout. The AI used for answer checking works behind the scenes and cannot be prompted by players. The AI & Agent Docs links at the bottom of this page describe what the site actually does. To report a problem or propose a Krillion prompt, use the suggestion box and rating buttons at the end of a dive, and please leave out personal details.
Frequently asked questions
Is Krillion.game the official Krillion?
No. Krillion.game is run independently and is not connected to the original game, which you can find at krillion.io.
Does Krillion.game cost anything?
No. The daily set and Unlimited games are free, with no checkout, subscriptions or credits.
Will my progress follow me to another device?
No. There are no accounts, so history and statistics stay in the browser you play on. The server only links dives to a random identifier kept in a cookie.
What happens if my answer is not on the list?
If it is genuinely correct for the prompt, an AI check can still accept it and give it one of the six tiers. Wrong, vague or ambiguous answers are rejected, and you can try again while the timer runs.
How do I share an Unlimited game?
Finish the game and press Copy result. The link in the copied text opens the same game id for whoever follows it.
